Hydrogen is increasingly used as an energy source for reasons of environmental protection. Hydrogen can be produced from biomass via a synthesis gas. However, hydrogen is mostly produced by electrolysis. Depending on the method, the hydrogen pressure at atmospheric pressure is up to a maximum of about 435 psi. Compressors then compress to a final pressure where the gas is stored, for example in the natural gas network or vehicle refueling bundles or for industry.
Hydrogen is an important gas for industry and is used in numerous applications:
- as cutting gas and welding gas in metal working
- as a protective gas and coolant in the semiconductor industry and research
- in the food industry and metal production as a process gas in production
